Huawei CEO Guo Ping states that his company has never placed loopholes in his network equipment and promises never to. He made his statements during a speech at Telecom Fair Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Guo made a speech in the context of 5G internet. That many times faster successor to 4G will be rolled out this and next year, and Huawei will be considered an essential provider of necessary network equipment.
For years before Huawei became familiar with its smartphones, the company was one of the world’s largest suppliers of network equipment for, for example, telephone masts.
In the last few months, the Chinese Huawei has increasingly come under fire. The US sees Huawei as a risk to national security and suspicion is growing in other countries as well. For example, GroenLinks said earlier this month that the Netherlands should avoid Huawei’s 5G equipment because of the risks to the business.
Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said in January that his company would never spy for the Chinese government. “No law obliges companies in China to build back doors,” Ren said.
