The Olympic torchlight procession through Greece is cancelled. The Greek Olympic Committee has decided, as a precaution, to break the relay race across the country. The committee is afraid that there will be a lot of public, despite the advice to avoid large gatherings because of the coronavirus.
No public was welcome at the ignition of the flame on Thursday in Olympia. Nevertheless, many people tried to get a glimpse of the traditional ceremony and the first part of the parade also attracted many people. The flame was supposed to make a round through Greece for a week. The procession has now been cancelled. On Thursday, the Olympic flame in the old Olympic stadium in Athens will be handed over to the organizing committee of the Games in Tokyo. No public is welcome here either.
